I'm an Internet marketer, have been for over 13 years. I'm very fortunate to be able to work from home and earn a great living. Sometimes, however, I lose focus on the greatness of what our lives can be and how we can make such a difference in the lives of others. First if we can think of our life as a game, well it becomes much more fun as we find games to be more fun than plain work.More on this game concept in a minute.
The following is probably typical of most of us if we lose sight of the bigger picture. For example I get up in the morning and go to work, in my case I simply go from the bedroom down the hall to my office. Still many others commute to their place of work by car or other means. That is not important, it's our mental state and how we approach the day that makes all the difference.
For example if I lose focus I will start my day thinking okay I've got to market today, and do the things I do to attract customers, etc. This in reality is not much difference than the person who goes to their job each day and then simply does their job tasks all day.
Or I can start each day with the attitude of how can I improve the lives of many people through my marketing. In reality isn't that what it's all about anyway. People only buy products because they believe that product will improve their life in some way.
Here's what we don't want to lose sight of - each of us is like a product, the things we do, our actions and how we treat others can also improve the lives of people we come in contact with each day.
Back to the game concept, why don't we see how many people we can get to smile each day, or say thank you. Not only will we have fun in the process but we'll also improve the lives of those we come in contact with.
Here's a couple of quick stories:
I was up in Nashville recently and driving home I stopped into a Zaxby's restaurant about 15 miles away off the Interstate. Behind the cash register was a young black man, who I would say was in his upper twenties.
He was in a wheelchair and I suspect he had lost the use of both his legs in either the military (in battle) or in an accident. Here was a young man who had every reason to feel bitter about the cruel fate he had been dealt. But you know what, here was a young man who was going out of his way to make sure you had what you needed. As a customer he made you feel special. In all my years of going into fast food restaurants and sit down restaurants he was as special a person as I had ever met. You would have thought he owned Zaxby's. His name was Robert as I couldn't help but speak to him and tell him how special a job he was doing. He made me feel good and I don't know that I will ever forget Robert.
I was also in the US Post Office recently and there was a special clerk at the window. He wasn't handicapped but he was so friendly and helpful I told him he was the friendliest, and most helpful person I had ever met working for any government agency.
And so I endeavor to market more than just my products but also to market myself and provide good will and put smiles on the faces of those I come in contact with. And I challenge each of you to do the same. Life is just so much more fun when we're bringing joy to others.
